Most of my blog posting have been centered around encouraging people to exercise. However, today's post will be a little different. With good intentions, I have to request you gym rats and fitness freaks to stop working out seven days a week. You are actually doing more harm than good. For the lifters, your muscles need rest. When you lift weights you are actually tearing the muscles. The repair of that muscle allows it to grow. That I why it is so important to allow for rest days.
For the cardio junkies, over training can cause a plateau in weight loss. That four miles you like to run maybe tough to do but the body may not respond to the excessive training the way you think. There are studies that even show it can lead to weight gain. Your body doesn't only burn fat when you do cardio. It burns muscle as well. Depleting the body of muscular hypertrophy could cause the body to pull more fat from the foods you give. Then in turn using that fuel as energy to complete your rigorous workouts.
The ideal number of days to workout and see a progressive change is 4-5 days a week. Stick to that and you will still be able to hold on to your title as a workout nut.
